Toby Price sweeps rounds three and four of 2011 Yamaha AORC

Toby Price - KTM

KTM’s Toby Price has stormed through round four of the 2011 Yamaha Australian Off Road Championship, dominating in the action-packed Sprint format to take the day’s outright victory ahead of Yamaha’s Matt Phillips and his teammate – former World Champ, Stefan Merriman.

Price dropped three of the day’s six sprint races to Phillips however his times were enough to earn him outright victory for the day.

In a massive and gruelling weekend of racing, nearly 270 competitors faced a tough slog out on the track with the sun finally shining through on Sunday.

In the E1 Class, Merriman was the man to beat, finishing the day ahead of KTM’s Ben Grabham, with Yamaha’s Kirk Hutton taking the final step on the podium.

In the E2 class, Price took line honours, ahead of Yamaha’s Chris Hollis, while Husqvarna’s Glenn Kearney secured himself third place.

Phillips’ solid efforts in the E3 class, earned him bragging rights for the fourth round, in addition to placing second outright on the day to Price, not bad for the Tasmanian in his first full season of Off Road Racing!

The Yamaha young-gun took out the E3 class ahead of KTM’s Jarrod Bewley and Husaberg-mounted Geoff Braico.

In the Masters Class it was repeat of round three with Yamaha’s Geoff Ballard taking line honours with Trent Lean (Suzuki) and David Cash (Yamaha) rounding out the top three.

Damien Smith again took line honours in the Veterans class, with Garry Dukes in second place and Mark Buchanan wrapping up the top three.

Sweden’s Emelie Karlson (Yamaha) took out the Women’s class with fellow Yamaha riders Jemma Wilson and Jess Gardiner taking the remaining places on the podium, while Mitch Kellner, Jack Simpson, Scott Sowry and Brendon Walther all topped their respective classes in the Junior ranks.

Mike Alessi Earns 10th and PJ Larsen Earns 8th at Indy SX

Red Bull/KTM Factory Team rider Mike Alessi earned 10th overall at the tenth round of the AMA Supercross Series at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.

Mike Alessi - KTM

Alessi and his teammate Andrew Short were both placed in heat one. Off the start both riders were in the top ten. Short worked his way up to 5th place to earn a great gate pick in the main event while Alessi took the final transfer spot with a 9th place finish.

The main event did not go so well for Short. He had a bad jump off the line and came around the first corner near the back of the back. A few turns later he suffered a mechanical problem and was unable to finish the race. His teammate, Alessi, carried on rounding the first lap in 15th position.  He moved up two positions on the next lap to take over 13th place. He continued to maintain his pace as the race progressed and by the halfway point had picked up two more positions. With only two laps to go he was able to capitalize on a mistake by another rider and picked up 10th overall for the night.

"I am happy to finish inside the top ten tonight. This course was definitely challenging and I felt like everyone had a couple close calls tonight as we tried to pick up the speed on the course. I am excited about my consistency to finish inside the top ten but would like to move my focus toward the top five for the second half of this season," stated Alessi.

JDR/J-Star/KTM rider PJ Larsen earned 8th overall in the East Supercross Lites class at the Indianapolis Supercross held at the Lucas Oil Stadium. His teammate, Tye Simmonds, finished 16th overall in the Supercross class.

Andrew Short

The night started out horribly for Larsen who had a wreck on the first lap of his Lites Supercross Heat. "I came out 3rd around the first turn and was sitting in a good position and the next thing I knew I was on the ground," stated Larsen. "I have no idea exactly how I crashed I just remember seeing the air, hitting the ground and then being ran over a few times in the second corner." Larsen and his bike were a little banged up after that crash and he did not finish the heat race.

Larsen was forced to go to the LCQ where he got a poor start. He quickly moved up through the pack to move into 2nd place. He finished in that spot taking the final transfer spot to the main. "I was lucky I was able to move through the pack quickly in the LCQ. It was a bit of a bar-banging race but in the end I was able to make it to the main event."

When the gate dropped for the Lites main, Larsen put together a great start and was within the top five as they entered the first turn before getting pushed wide resulting in a 7th place position at the exit of the turn. Larsen remained in 7th through the remainder of the first lap before jumping up to 6th place after Hunter Hewitt crashed on lap two. Near the middle of the moto, Larsen began to tire slightly as he has been fighting a stomach virus lately. He dropped two positions to Blake Wharton and Dean Wilson.  He held 8th place from the tenth lap through the finish to earn a top ten result.

In the Supercross class, Simmonds was able to put in a solid heat race performance finishing 6th overall. "My heat went really well. I nearly grabbed the holeshot except my tire washed slightly and I went wider than I should have in the first turn," commented Simmonds. He came through the first lap mark in 6th and maintained that position throughout the entire heat.

In the Supercross main event, Simmonds was able to get a mid-pack start and sat in 12th around the first corner. A few corners into the race, a rider crossed in front of him off a jump sending Simmonds to the ground. When Simmonds recovered he had lost a lot of time and was sitting in last position. He spent the first few laps of the race catching up to the tail end of the pack and was not able to make his first pass until part way into the moto. He eventually worked his way up to 16th where he finished for the night.

Luis Belaustegui: KTM hero of the Dakar 2011 riding a KTM 150 XC

The Dakar Rally is as much about adventure as it is about winning. While the limelight may rest with the leaders like KTM's 3-times winners Marc Coma and Cyril Despres, there are dozens of other passionate KTM riders who fulfill a dream by competing in this great rally. One of them in 2011 was Luis Belaustegui who also did it in quite a remarkable way.

KTM 150 XC

Luis is perhaps the perfect example of living the Dakar dream, the Argentinean-born American citizen not only set out to achieve the almost impossible; he also did it riding a KTM 150 XC machine and because of this heroic attempt, Luis very quickly became a media star.

Luis made it through to Stage Six and that in itself was a mega achievement on a small bike and in a field of 186 of some of the most hardened and experienced tacticians in the world. He eventually had to withdraw because he ran out of time and was 12 minutes too late getting to the final control point in the tricky stage from Iquique to Arica, almost on the southern border of Peru. And he did this not because of any problems with rider or bike, but because he chose to stop and assist many riders along the way. That's the true Dakar spirit and it deserves to be recognized.

Luis Belaustegui

In fact, while he may have been out of the official standings after the incident at Stage Six, Luis kept on going and rode all the way to Buenos Aires. "I decided to keep riding the KTM 150 on the assistance route," he said. "I rode all the way from Arica to Buenos Aires at 120 km and the bike was marvelous." Spanish TV was so impressed with this courageous effort that they fitted Luis with a helmet camera to record the last four hours of his epic trip on the KTM 150 right up to to the finish in the Argentinean capital.

This gallant rider may have been on the smallest bike in the entire field but he captured the attention and the hearts of the media along the way. He was interviewed by Eurosport and by German, French and Spanish TV - indeed Spanish TV made him a favorite and interviewed him every day. Luc Alphand, the Dakar TV host interviewed him and congratulated him on his efforts. He was in demand for interviews with local TV stations and radio stations from Buenos Aires and throughout Argentina and Chile.

Luis Belaustegui: "In all of these interviews I made a point of saying that the KTM 150 had no problems and no failures at all. I said that the bike could handle any kind of terrain."

Luis was also a star of the online and print media and should he decide to compile a record of his press clippings, he will have a very large scrap book. These included a feature story for the online version of Clarin, one of Argentina's leading daily newspapers. The story was the most read article on the website that day, consumed by 45,000 readers.

Luis succeeded in completing some of the toughest and most challenging stages of the Dakar 2011 and while he may have had to retire because he did not make it to the final check point in time, he still learned a lot about the rules and he even hopes to tackle this marathon rally a second time.

"Now and after talking to riders and other knowledgeable people, I understand my mistake and, even though I will stop to help riders, I will do it in a way that does not affect my race," Luis said. "I have learned a lot about the rules of the Dakar. I have learned a lot about how to help and how to use the safety instruments."

Luis Belaustegui, KTM salutes you for your great effort in the Dakar 2011. You might have been riding the smallest KTM in the field, but you proved it was still one of the toughest!
