Sydney Motorcycle and Scooter Show heads to the Harbour

Australia's largest and most comprehensive motorcycle showcase returns to Sydney with a new name and new venue this November.

The Sydney Motorcycle and Scooter Show will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour, from the 25th to the 27th of November.

The CBD location makes the show's scooter element especially significant as more and more people discover the economic and time-saving benefits of two-wheel travel in the city.

Scooters were a standout in the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries' (FCAI) recent first-quarter sales figures which show signs of an emerging recovery.

FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said the Sydney Motorcycle and Scooter Show played an important role in stimulating industry interest and felt the new venue would provide additional impact.

"The new venue is well chosen, giving people the opportunity to see at first hand, and in one place, what is available in the market for inexpensive fuel-wise transport that is growing in popularity both in Australia and overseas", Mr McKellar said.

In addition to indoor exhibits, the show will also make use of the venue's surrounding areas for live action demonstrations and motorcycle test rides.

Team Valvoline Succeed on Dirt Track Debut

The Valvoline Dirt Track Team made a successful debut at the Valvoline King of Nepean held last weekend at

King of Nepean

Nepean Raceway west of Sydney. Consisting of Lee Hunter, Justin Burdis, Grant Charnock, Oliver Smith and the Greg Epis, the Team Valvoline members battled handle bar to handle bar through the four heat rounds with Australia’s best Dirt Track stars over two days of intense racing culminating in team members featuring in all senior finals.

After an exhausting race program, Valvoline KTM rider Lee Hunter emerged victorious in the race for the 125 Stroke Title and runner up in the Open Class Title. “I am very please with my results, particularly as some of the fastest racers in the country are here at the Valvoline King of Nepean this weekend” said Hunter at the podium ceremony.

Valvoline KTM mounted Greg Epis in his first ever Open Dirt Track event finished a creditable 5th in the Open Class Title. Epis a former A grade National Superbike racer, latter said “the Valvoline King of Nepean is only my third Dirt Track event, and I am impressed with both the speed and ability of many of the younger racers, I am getting faster with every lap, in time I hope to challenge them”.

Valvoline Yamaha rider and reigning NSW 250 Dirt Track Champion Grant Charnock, progressed through his heat rounds undefeated. The 250 Four Stroke final saw Charnock in a race long fight to the chequered flag with Josh Bennett, with Bennett taking the title by only 1.6 seconds. In the 450 4 Stroke Event Charnock charged through the contenders to finish in third position.

After avoiding massive crashes in both the Unlimited Final and the Valvoline King of Nepean feature race Charnock shadowed eventual the eventual King, of Nepean Honda CRF 450 mounted Paul Caslick, only to crash out of contention in both events. At the close of proceedings Charnock said “I am disappointed with both crashes, my Valvoline Yamaha has been strong all weekend I just have to be fitter and faster next outing”.

The Valvoline Team had more success in the ultra competitive 250 2 Stroke Final with Valvoline/Fox/Action MC supported rider Justin Burdis beating Valvoline Team mates Hunter and Smith for the final podium position in the standings. Burdis later said “I am stoked, I made both my finals and edged out both Lee and Ollie in the 250 2 Stroke Final, we get on extremely well of the track but when the gate drops we are bitter rivals”.

Though Charnock was disappointed with his results over the Valvoline King of Nepean event he was suitably buoyed upon hearing of his selection in the final six racers to under go the Evolution Sports Group Superbike Test evaluation process.

Male Depression the driver for Riding4aCause

Riding 4 A Cause

Three Sydney friends who share a passion for motorbikes have come together to declare they will ride to the red centre of Australia to raise awareness of male depression.

In their quest, they aim to rally at least another 497 fellow motorcyclists (a total of 500 - both men and women) to join them on their journey.

The motorcycling trio aim to remove the social stigma associated with mental health disorders by asking men to talk about the challenges and stress they face.

Leaving Sydney on 5th September, friends, Raz Chorev, Andrew Blanda and Robbie James will embark on a week-long journey covering over 3,000km visiting towns such as Bathurst, Hay, Broken Hill in New South Wales and then onto Port Augusta and Coober Pedy in South Australia before heading into the Northern Territory.

Upon arriving in the Northern Territory they will join other motorcycle enthusiasts from all over Australia who have signed up to the Black Dog Ride.

The Black Dog Ride aims to raise awareness of depression and is the brainchild of Steve Andrews (who last year rode solo around Australia to spread the word). As a collective, all riders will complete the last 130kms of the journey together from Alice Springs to the Glen Helen Resort on 11th September 2010.

Male depression affects one in six men in Australia and one in eight men worldwide yet it is difficult to self-diagnose and is often blanketed by silence with many choosing to ignore the symptoms.

Raz Chorev, just one of the three original starters from Sydney says he has seen the affects of depression first hand and wanted to do something to help.

“I grew up with a mother who worked in the mental health system and through her work I have seen first hand how depression can affect sufferers and their families, especially men.

“Women tend to be more open to talking about the issue and seeking help but when it’s somewhat taboo when it comes to men and we really want to do something to change that.” He says.

“Hopefully by taking this trip and talking about male depression along the way we can demonstrate that it’s OK to open up and talk about our concerns,” Chorev says.

Men experience depression differently to women and are less likely to seek help or medical treatment. Instead they may use alcohol or drugs to suppress their feelings.

Chorev, Blanda and James are urging everyone to get involved either as a participant or a supporter. To find out more visit www.riding4acause.org To make a donation toward helping those with depression please visit: www.everydayhero.com.au/riding4acause
